I started sharing recommendations years ago for pubs in Birmingham. I’ve always been a pub explorer. Then I started getting asked for pub crawl routes by mates. This soon cascaded into tap rooms and breweries, especially as my home area of Stirchley is now the proud custodian of 3 breweries, each with a tappy, and home to some fine micropubs too. (And surprisingly, I’m not barred from any of them)
In addition to this, the beer scene in the second city is evolving at a tremendous rate, and you soon realise that there are lots to choose from. I’m interested in both cask ale, and craft beer. I’m even partial to a lager if it's well made, as well as some ciders.
The city centre has a great selection of pubs, and as pedestrian and tram links to areas around the centre continue to improve, the city centre feels like it’s expanding. Areas like the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth and Hockley have all started to feel like part of the centre over the past year or so. Outside of that, there are great pubs all over Birmingham.
As far as cocktail bars are concerned, there is a broad range of cocktail bars across Birmingham, and some are repeatedly on the national ‘Top 50 Cocktail Bars’ list (Passing Fancies and Couch recently came 3rd and 4th respectively). If you like specialist, independent cocktail bars, Birmingham has its fair share. My neighbourhood of Stirchley has two.
